The Topsail Island Fall Fishing Report | Coastline Realty Vacations

Fall is here and it's time to hit the water, and no we're not talking about swimming. It is fall fishing on Topsail Island, and if you like to fish, then you're going to love a Topsail Island fall fishing vacation. Here is everything you need to know to have a fantastic day of fishing.

Don't forget your license

Fishing Licenses are required in North Carolina for all resident and non-resident sportsman. Licenses can be purchased online or from a local tackle shop or outdoor retailer. NC fishing licenses are valid for one year from the date of purchase unless otherwise noted on the license. All fishermen age 16 years and older are required to have a valid fishing license to fish in any North Carolina waters. There are exceptions when pier fishing or on most charters as they both have inclusive licenses. However, it is best to check the rules and regulations at the NC Wildlife Commission website.

What's on your hook?

Generally, in the fall there is a wide variety of fish to catch in the waters off and near Topsail Island. Inland waters are full of fish migrating from inland waters to the ocean to begin their southerly migration. Because of this...Snapper, Black Sea Bass, and Tilefish are all frequent catches on the inland waters. Some boats will have towers which will allow for site casting and this is great for catching Red Cobia.

If you're heading offshore you'll likely net some King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, and Yellow Fin Tuna. Once offshore, it is likely that you will battle billfish, such as Sail Fish and Marlin. Eat your Wheaties cause these big game fish are fighters. These are memory making fish so get the phone out and get ready to make some friends jealous of your Topsail Island fall fishing vacation.

Find a great charter

One of the best ways to enjoy fishing is by hooking up (pardon the pun) with one of our local charter boats. Charters offer an almost limitless amount of options. There are shorter trips for just a few hours, or take advantage of an all-day adventure where your day will end with bringing in the big one. Head boats are a great way to get out on the water with the kids and offer a lot of conveniences and excellent fishing in an affordable package.

If you need help planning your fall fishing adventure and are looking to add charter excursion then there are a couple great options available. Below you'll find two of the best on the island. Grab the kids, load up your buddies, pack the cooler and get ready for a great day on the water.

Surf fishing Topsail Island style

If you love the beach and love fishing, then surfcasting is where you'll want to be this fall. The crowds have thinned, the fish are moving, the weather is perfect. Now all you need to do is pack the cooler, turn on your favorite game, kick back with the family or friends, and cast into our pristine waters.

Surf fishing is an inexpensive and fun way to fish. Anglers in the fall along the waters of Topsail Island will likely hook Drum, Spanish, Albacore, Bluefish, Flounder, and Trout. Surf fishing does require a specific set up, and many local tackle shops have this equipment for rent so don't worry about spending a lot of money.  You will want to bring a cooler to keep your bait in, a cart or bucket, rod-holding spikes, and your favorite beach chair. Oh, and don't forget to get propane or charcoal for the grill later because you're going to need it.

Pier fishing is fun for everyone

Fall fishing can be a serious sport and adventure. Anglers from all over the east coast love fishing Topsail Island. However, there is just as much fun to be had taking the little ones for their first day of fishing off one of the three piers on Topsail Island. Think back to that first time you felt the tug on the other end of your pole, or how excited you were when you saw a fish jump at your bait. Maybe you just love spending time with family, sitting on the pier and watching the waves roll in. Few things allow families to enjoy quality time together like pier fishing.

Pier fishing is great because you don't need a license as the pier's general license covers visitors. There are amenities like snack shops, tackle shops, bathrooms, and cleaning stations. Everything you need can be rented right on site, so there is no need to buy a lot of expensive equipment.  If you've never tried it, make this fall the year you introduce your kids, family or friends to the joy of pier fishing. We know you won't be disappointed. Need to find just the right pier near your fall vacation rental. Here is all the contact info for all three of Topsails Island's piers.
